Lizard Point Quizzes announcement

To clarify some incorrect information on social media:

Lizard Point Quizzes is NOT SHUTTING DOWN. We are just changing.

Quizzes will continue to be freely available to everyone indefinitely.

February 20, 2022

On March 31, 2023, we will be making some significant changes to Lizard Point Quizzes.

Well over twenty-five years ago, I founded Lizard Point Quizzes as a hobby project to help my kids learn geography. After more than two decades of helping learners discover more about the world they live in, we've made the difficult decision to wind down some high maintenance aspects of Lizard Point Quizzes on March 31, 2023. The site will remain - but we will no longer be offering accounts for teachers, students and individual learners to track results.

We are providing significant lead time in order for teachers to make any necessary alternative plans for 2023. The website will continue to be available beyond March 2023 as a free resource for learners, but without user accounts and the features that are a part of that.

Thank you for trusting us with your students. We have been proud to provide a fun learning experience to students and other learners all across the globe.

With sincere thanks, Lyndsey from Lizard Point Quizzes

Further information

Why are you making these changes?

While working on the site has always been rewarding, I wish to retire, travel more, and enjoy being a grandparent. Maintaining and updating the site, as well as offering full user support while traveling has been challenging, to say the least.

Additionally, the ever increasing focus on user privacy has had a big impact on how we allocate our resources. While we have always prioritized child and youth privacy and kept our need for student data to an absolute minimum, more and more schools are requiring strict compliance with complicated privacy laws and technical frameworks, along with some fairly onerous legal accountabilities. We cannot thrive with these additional burdens and costs.

In the meantime, can we still create accounts and purchase or renew our subscription?

Yes, teachers and students can continue to create accounts, and we will continue selling new plans and renewals until Dec 31, 2022. However, please note that all Teacher Plus plans purchased after March 31, 2022 will expire on March 31st, 2023. In other words, after March 31, 2022, new and renewed Teacher Plus plans will be for a period of less than one year.

Individual monthly, one month and three month plans will continue to be offered until they naturally reach an expiry date in March 2023.

What will happen to the website after March 31 2023?

The website will remain and be free to use, but without account sign-on. Without user accounts, quiz scores will not be tracked, and quizzes will no longer be customizable. The World Leaders section will be trimmed down to remove quizzes that involve frequent updating. Ads will continue to be safe for students and youths in that they are non-tracking ads with inappropriate ad categories filtered out.

How does this affect teachers and students?

Sign-on

Teachers will be able to sign in until April 30, 2023, so that they can retrieve and download student quiz scores.

Sign-on for everyone else (students and individual users) will be cut off on April 1, 2023.

Custom Quizzes

Custom quizzes already created will remain, but will be disassociated from the user that created them. They will no longer be editable. This will occur on April 1, 2023.

Class Blackboards

Class Blackboards will not be accessible after March 31, 2023.

Quiz scores

Student data, i.e. quiz scores, will be available to teachers until April 30, 2023.

Other teacher functions

Teachers will not be able to customize quizzes, update the blackboard, create classes, add students, update student aliases, modify pass thresholds or change class passwords after March 31, 2023.

How does this affect other users with accounts?

Users who are neither teachers, nor students associated with a teacher account, will not be able to sign in after March 31, 2023.

How does this affect users without accounts?

Users without accounts will not be impacted, except by the reduced content in the World Leaders section.

What will happen to user account data?

User account data will be destroyed a month or two after the teacher sign-in cut-off date of April 30 2023. We will retain data related to purchases for tax reporting and auditing purposes.
