The Middle East is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia, Turkey (both Asian and European), and Egypt (which is mostly in North Africa). There is not a standard definition of what constitutes the Middle East. Some definitions may include (or exclude): Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the 5 stans (Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan). Some defintions include a few more north African countries. Click on an area on the map to answer the questions.

  • There is no correct or generally agreed upon definition of the Middle East. Wikipedia contains information on the territories, history, economy, demographics etc. new window icon

  • Armenia globe icon and Azerbaijan globe icon have long been associated with the Middle East but some sources now consider them part of Europe based on their economic and political trends. This, of course, would be based on political and economic definitions, not on a physical definition.
  • Israel globe icon is recognized by 164 of the United Nation's 193 members. Of the remaining 28 nations, 25 of them are Muslim-majority countries.     Start at the top, and go clockwise, and they are in alphabetical order:
